15 hurt in Munshiganj polls violence

At least 15 people have been injured in a clash between the supporters of two Union Parishad (UP) chairman candidates in Sirajdikhan Upazila.

The incident occurred at Syedpur Bazar around 9:45pm on Thursday when the supporters of M A Kashem halted a car alleging it to be a 'fake police' vehicle, said assistant police superintendent Mohammad Saiful Islam.

Alpana Begum, wife of the former Sabujbag Police chief (presently on a UN peace keeping mission) Shafiqul Islam, was returning from her brother's residence in the car. Her brother Mujibur Rahman was the other candidate in the election.

She was, however, released with the help of the police, but supporters of Kashem vandalised Rahman's election camp at Syedpur Bazar around 10:15pm and torched his posters and banners.

Rahman's supporters also retaliated, triggering the violence that left at least 15 of the both sides injured.

The injured were admitted to nearby hospitals and clinics.

Police brought the situation under control, the police officer said.
